SLMC TNA to back 20th Amendment to Constitution

Sumanthiran said that there were some reservations by some minority parties during the process to draft a new Constitution on abolishing the Executive Presidency.However he said that following the recent incidents in the country it was clear there is a need to abolish the Executive Presidency. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) are to support to the 20th Amendment to Constitution.The position of the TNA and SLMC was conveyed to Parliament during a debate today on abolishing the Executive Presidency TNA MP, M.A. Sumanthiran said that after the 2015 Presidential elections, Tamils assumed that the Executive Presidency, as a system of Government will be abolished soon. However he noted this was done only in part through the 19th Amendment and there was an expectation that the rest will be done through a new Constitution. SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem said that successive Presidents promised to abolish the Executive Presidency but instead they attempted to abuse its powers.However he said abolishing the Executive Presidency cannot be done without a Referendum.  (Colombo Gazette)
