In some ways, we deserved the victory, as we pushed hard,” Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia.“At the same time, if Asamoah hadn’t cleared off the line, we could’ve lost, as that was a tough situation to get out of. It was more importantly a very entertaining game between two teams who moved the ball with pace, played good football and in a way, both deserved the points.”Lautaro came off the bench and snatched a last-gasp winner just moments after Kwadwo Asamoah’s goal-line clearance to deny Piotr Zielinski.“Lautaro is doing what he has to do. He could’ve done better in the past, but he took his opportunity coming off the bench today.“Napoli have a squad of absolute quality and move the ball around at 1,000km/h.” last_img read more

Obviously, that didn’t happen.Mayfield finished 17-of-32 for 226 yards, two touchdowns and two picks – one of which was returned for a touchdown by the Buckeyes. After the contest, Ohio State junior defensive end Jalyn Holmes had a bit of fun with the whole situation. (Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images)Michigan football may have cemented its place as the Big Ten East favorite with its 42-7 win over Penn State on Saturday. On the other side of that result, there is a brewing quarterback situation with the Nittany Lions. When healthy, Trace McSorley is one of the better quarterbacks in college football. He has been banged up and hasn’t looked like himself over the last few weeks, though.McSorley hasn’t completed 60-percent of his passes in a game since before Penn State’s dramatic loss to Ohio State. Starting with that Buckeyes game, he is just 70-for-138 for 948 yards (189.6 per game), four touchdowns and three interceptions through the air.He does have 376 rushing yards and three scores on the ground in that stretch, but he hasn’t looked right. That goes for the PSU offense as a whole, which is averaging under 23 points per game over the last five, in which the team is 2-3.Some believe that Tommy Stevens might be the answer considering Trace McSorley’s recent play.PSU site Onward State wrote as much on Monday:“…Tommy Stevens should start next week if McSorley’s injured right knee hasn’t improved significantly by Saturday. A healthy Stevens is a much better option than McSorley doing his best to run around on one healthy leg.[…]It was obvious McSorley wasn’t himself when he slid a yard short of the line to gain on 3rd and 11 in the first quarter. In what world would a healthy Trace McSorley slide near the first down marker rather than fight through some contact to extend his team’s drive?McSorley just looked off throughout the game. His accuracy was nowhere near as precise as it normally is, and he didn’t have the normal quickness to his step in the run game. He seemed hesitant to take off and extend plays, which is obviously uncharacteristic.”Stevens threw an awful pick six on his first attempt against the Wolverines, but did lead the team on its only touchdown drive of the day, running it in himself.Over the last few years, Penn State has worked him into the offense in other ways, including as a runner and pass catcher. James Franklin was asked about his quarterbacks, and said that they will look to get Stevens more involved overall.Franklin on Tommy Stevens: “We’ll continue approaching it the way we have, being able to mix him in in some fo the packages we have. … We’ve gotta be better on first and second down.”— Audrey Snyder (@audsnyder4) November 6, 2018Franklin remains committed to McSorley at quarterback, though. From the York Daily Record:“So it’s going to be very important that we find a way to establish the run game again, so there’s not so much on the shoulders of Trace McSorley.”[…]“It’s a way to get (Stevens) some experience but allow Trace to get in a rhythm and our offense to get in a rhythm which is important,” Franklin said. “That’s something we haven’t done a good job of the last couple of weeks.”Penn State football hosts Wisconsin at noon on Saturday.[York Daily Record]last_img read more

first_imgWillie Taggart on the sidelines.MIAMI, FL – OCTOBER 06: Head coach Willie Taggart of the Florida State Seminoles coaching in the second half against the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium on October 6, 2018 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Mark Brown/Getty Images)Of the major coaching hires from last off-season, Florida State’s Willie Taggart seems to be facing the most pressure. The Seminoles were incredibly disappointing last year.In Taggart’s first season after coming over from Oregon, Florida State went 5-7, and just 3-5 in ACC play. While the team is always a big recruiting draw, this cycle was a down one for Taggart’s program as well.In the 247Sports composite rankings, Florida State is at No. 16 in the country. Rivals has the team one spot higher, at No. 15.247 has that as the worst class FSU has finished with since 2007.After National Signing Day on Wednesday, Rivals identified Willie Taggart as one of the major coaches that needs to bounce back. From the site’s Rob Cassidy:The Seminoles’ 2019 class has its high points. In fact, a lot of schools would kill for Florida State’s haul. That doesn’t mean it’s good enough to meet the lofty expectations that exist in Tallahassee, however. In fact, Taggart’s 15th-place finish is FSU’s worst in a decade. For every recruiting victory (Akeem Dent, Brendan Gant, Nick Cross, etc.), there was a frustrating loss. Even with impressive tackle Donte Lucas signed, this class is unlikely to completely a fix a broken offensive line. Question marks continue to surround the Seminoles’ thin quarterback room going forward, as the program failed to sign a quarterback for the second-straight year. Point is, Willie Taggart needs to upgrade the talent on his roster if he hopes to challenge Clemson at the top of the ACC standings. Another relatively mediocre recruiting cycle in 2020 will turn up the anxiety level among an already restless fan base. It’s not time to panic by any means, but the sweat could start dripping at this time next year. There is already speculation that Taggart could be on the hot seat in 2019, in just his second season in Tallahassee. This recruiting class definitely isn’t bad, but it wasn’t the star-studded group that would’ve gotten many of the fans back on his sign.Other coaches included on the list are UCLA’s Chip Kelly, Missouri’s Barry Odom, and Louisville’s Scott Satterfield. All three of those coaches are dealing with varied circumstances. Kelly’s is the closest to Taggart after a rough first year in Westwood, but the Bruins’ fan base is much more relaxed. The Bruins class underwhelmed though, finishing No. 44 at 247.Odom had a decent season, but now deals with NCAA sanctions, and finished with the second-to-last class in the SEC and No. 36 overall.Louisville was a trainwreck this season, and he couldn’t immediately revamp a class that finished No. 73. He’ll have much more rope than the rest of this list though, cleaning up after a disaster of a final season under Bobby Petrino.[Rivals]last_img read more

LSU defeated the Auburn 27-23. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)LSU has emerged as a favorite in the SEC this season. Head coach Ed Orgeron got some big news about his offensive line depth, with the reinstatement of former starting guard Ed Ingram.Ingram was suspended indefinitely by the school in August 2018, as a result of an investigation into alleged aggravated sexual assault against a minor in his native Texas. He was on trial for the charges earlier this week, and they have been dropped. As a result, Ingram has been reinstated to play for the Tigers. It doesn’t sound like he’ll be able to suit up this weekend, however, as a result of an NCAA rule that mandates a five-day “acclimation period” for players being added to an active roster.LSU travels to Vanderbilt tomorrow, so it is not expected that Ingram will be able to play. As The Advocate‘s Brooks Kubena states, LSU’s first game after that period ends is the Oct. 5 home game against non-conference opponent Utah State. With Ed Ingram’s full reinstatement, the only technical barrier from playing in an official game is the NCAA’s five-day acclimatization period. The former starting offensive guard would be on schedule to return to play when #LSU hosts Utah State on Oct. 5. https://t.co/lwRhpjhlYA— Brooks Kubena (@BKubena) September 20, 2019Details of the case against Ingram have been sealed by the state of Texas. His attorney said that he could not comment further, when asked about the decision by The Advocate.Once he’s up to speed, he could be in the mix at the left guard spot for the Tigers, where there have been depth issues. Ed Ingram started 12 games for the team back in 2017.LSU has opened the season 3-0, with a huge road win at Texas in Week 2 highlighting the early season success.[The Advocate]last_img read more

Our players today, are disappointed, of course, but I also think they know we need to step up our level to get to the level we want to get to,” added the Norwegian after suffering his first defeat since taking over 12 games ago in December.United lost forwards Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to muscle injuries midway through the match and replacements Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata failed to provide the necessary spark.PSG had to cope without the injured Neymar and Edison Cavani, two thirds of their attack, yet remained a real threat in the final third with Julian Draxler and Angel Di Maria causing United problems.advertisementThat is the kind of strength in depth United will need to build if they are to return to being the kind of force in Europe that they were under Alex Ferguson.Reality check for United: Solskjaer”It’s a reality check, you can see the strength they have when they put those players in as you talk about but that’s the level we want to get to,” added Solskjaer.”And we are looking to strengthen the squad and then again we have so many young players to take a step up for next season.”Premier League momentum won’t be affected by PSG defeat: SolskjaerThe Norwegian insisted, however, that his first loss won’t wreck the momentum United have built up in the Premier League.”No, not at all because at this club we have to bounce back and we are in a tournament, the Champions League, where it’s always going to be difficult, but our bread and butter is the (domestic) league so (I’m) not afraid of that.”The reaction in the dressing room was disappointment and when we go to Paris we’ll give it a go. It is a difficult mountain to climb but not impossible”.Only once since the 2010-11 season have United won a Champions League knockout stage game and, with key midfielder Paul Pogba suspended after his late red card, the odds are stacked against that changing in Paris on March 6.Also Read | Pele remembers save of the century in tribute to deceased Gordon BanksAlso Read | Emiliano Sala died of head, torso injuries in crashAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Rajasthan Royals were cruising along at 108 for 1 in their chase of 185 before the incident – by the end of the night, RR had fallen short and KXIP had won their opening game of the 2019 Indian Premier League by 14 runs.Opinions were divided after Ashwin’s Mankading but the man himself did not offer anything more to the debate and said it was an instinctive decision.”It was pretty instinctive. I actually didn’t load and he (Buttler) left the crease,” Ashwin said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “That’s always been my take on it because it’s my half of the crease. I was not even at the crease, he wasn’t even looking at me and he just left the place,” Ashwin said.RR vs KXIP, IPL 2019: HIGHLIGHTS | REPORTAshwin said he was not sure if Buttler’s controversial decision was the turning point of the game: “We ended on the right side of the coin, but I definitely think that those are game-changing moments,” he said.Later in the press conference, Ashwin said he was thinking of the rules of the game and not the spirit. “It was instinctive. It wasn’t planned. I don’t know where the spirit of the game things comes because if it’s within the rules, it is. I don’t understand the point of sporting spirit because it is within the rules.”R Ashwin was severly criticised by Jos Buttler’s England teammates Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy while South Africa pacer Dale Steyn felt Ashwin was not going to win any Spirit of Cricket Awards.advertisement”I can’t believe what I’m seeing!! @IPL Terrible example to set for young kids coming through. In time I think Ashwin will regret that,” Morgan tweeted while Roy kept it short and said: “Ashwin, that’s shocking behaviour! Very disappointed to see that.”Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen said the Mankading was against the spirit of the game. “It’s not on, it’s an absolute shocker,” he said.Pietersen felt it would have been okay had Ashwin warned Buttler about his tendency to leave the crease at the non-striker’s end. However, Aakash Chopra said the Law of the game was above the “Mythical Spirit of The Game.”Snehal Pradhan said Ashwin resurrected a mode of dismissal that should be applied against all batsmen “who look to gain an extra centimetre.”Also Read | England cricket stars slam R Ashwin after he Mankads Jos ButtlerAlso Read | Remember Ashwin doing the same in an international game: Kaif on Mankad controversyFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. A section of the cricket fraternity, including a few former cricketers, criticised Ashwin for not honouring the spirit of the game.Ashwin’s Mankading act, it is safe to say, has become the biggest talking point of IPL 2019 so far. And as Kings XI were gearing up for their second match of the season against the Knight Riders in Kolkata on Wednesday, all eyes were on Ashwin following the social media storm over the last 24 hours.Incidentally, Ashwin was taken to the cleaners by the Kolkata Knight Riders batsmen at the Eden Gardens so much so that the KXIP captain finished with his second most expensive figures in IPL cricket. The off-spinner conceded 47 runs without picking up a wicket in his four-over quota. Ashwin was more expensive than today on only once occasion — when KXIP took on Sunrsiers Hyderabad in 2018 during which he had conceded 54 in his four-over quota.Ashwin, who had bowled with a lot of control, in KXIP’s opener against the Royals on Monday, sprayed it all over the pitch and paid the price for it.It was certainly not a good night for Ashwin with the ball at the Eden Gardens. While he started off by conceding nine runs after bringing himself on in the last over of the powerplay, he was tonked by Knight Riders’ in-form batsman, Nitish Rana.Raha smashed four sixes off Ashwin’s bowling, much to the delight of the Eden Gardens crowd. Ashwin conceded 16 runs off his last over wherein Rana cleared the ropes twice.advertisementQuite a few cricket fans on Twitter had fun at the expense of Ashwin as they brought up the Mankad row and criticised Ashwin’s bowling performance against KKR.Lol seems like Mankad is the only way Ashwin can take a wicket! #KKRvKXIPShort Third Man (@vyatikram188) March 27, 2019Ashwin searching for another “Mankad wicket ??????#KKRvKXIP #AshwinMankadsRofl Patra (@ding4dongcom) March 27, 2019When Ashwin bowls, Non striker has more chances to be dismissed #IPL2019 #AshwinMankads #AshwinShamefulCrimeMaster GoGo (@saransh_tewari) March 27, 2019Ashwin Bowled Badly Today Because His Focus Was More On Non Striker’s End Than On Strikers End… #KKRvKXIPBabu Bhaiya (@Shahrcasm) March 27, 2019Ashwin finishes his quota inside 12 overs.
