The Green Men, the two super fans known as Force and Sully who root for the Vancouver Canucks, aim to spice up Hockey Night in Canada’s Monday broadcast with their antics (5 p.m.). Saturday at a fan rally in downtown Vancouver, the Green Men announced they will be making the trip to Boston to watch their beloved Canucks play the Boston Bruins for Games three and four of the Stanley Cup finals — thanks to Travelzoo Inc, a global Internet media company. “In Vancouver and across Canada this spring the Canucks are the big story,” said Sully. “We’re going to help make Vancouver’s hockey story a little bigger in Boston next week. Our goal is to get some rings on the Canucks fingers and we’re not going to sleep until that happens.” The Green Men have caught the nation’s attention for their fun antics at Canucks games and have even spawned a whole group of imitators.“I don’t think we’ll be honoured with a Key to the City, but we’re thrilled to be traveling to Boston for both games and look forward to visiting — as only Green Men can,” said Force. In honour of the Vancouver Green Men, Travelzoo Canada will be giving out a phenomenal trip for two to anyone who is a member or signs up to be a member at Travelzoo.ca.

I’m not saying the Manhattan’s not possible, but right now the plan is to run here.”Bal a Bali, a 5-year-old Brazilian-bred horse, recorded his 12th win from 13 starts in the American, weaving his way through traffic and finding an opening in the stretch under Santa Anita’s leading rider Flavien Prat to reward favorite players with a $5 win mutuel. The American was the first race in nearly 11 months for Bal a Bali, who overcame a major ailment before Mandella could train him up to his U.S. debut.“It is really fulfilling to get his first race in the U.S. under his belt, because he had a serious problem coming out of quarantine when he had laminitis,” Mandella said.“Dr. Vernon Dryden, the podiatrist at Rood & Riddle in Kentucky, did an unbelievable job getting him back to the races. I can’t say enough about the job he did.”Mandella and Prat, meanwhile, have proved a winning combination. The 22-year-old Frenchman has ridden 15 horses for the Hall of Fame trainer this meet, winning five with five seconds. Dating back to his Southern California debut, Prat has won 17 times from 72 mounts for Mandella, 23 percent. He also has 15 seconds and six thirds for an in-the-money mark of 52 percent.“Flavien is winning at 30 percent on turf this meet with eight wins,” points out his agent, Derek Lawson. As to Beholder, who was scratched from yesterday’s Grade I Vanity Stakes due to a fever, Mandella said the two-time Eclipse Award winner continues to show progress.“Her temperature is staying at a good level and her blood is getting better,” he said. I haven’t seen anything that would tell me American Pharoah has regressed. Both horses look good, so that means they were pretty fit.“Going into the Derby, they were well-conditioned. You have to have good horses and they have to run their race, and they both ran their races and that’s a good sign.”Is the shorter Preakness distance of a mile and three sixteenths and a different track surface cause for concern?“You know what?,” Baffert said. “I’ve had a lot of success in the Preakness, because I’ve won it with really good horses. I’ve always gone in there and won with the best horse, but you still have to get the trip, the post, everything. You still have to be lucky.“I really don’t think about it until after the draw. Then you start trying to figure out strategy. The break is still the most important part. Last year with Bayern, he just got completely eliminated at the start, so you can get eliminated, forget about what kind of horse you have.“You never know how they’re going to run. When I got there with Silver Charm, I wasn’t sure how he was going to run, but I had just won the Derby, so I felt if he wins, fine, if he doesn’t, I still won the Derby.“I feel good about our horses for the Preakness, but you still need to get around there.”In conjunction with the Preakness, Santa Anita will present an attractive day of live racing along with a big Preakness party featuring the Preakness Handicapping Challenge offering $100,000 in prizes next weekend, May 16 and 17.Admission gates open on Preakness Day at 8 a.m., first live race post time is at 11:30 a.m. For details, visit santaanita.com. 1 October 2010 State involvement, challenges “We are confident the necessary work will be done, and we are committed to do the best we can to help grow the automotive industry in SA.” Lourencon said the Spark was well suited to the South African market, with customers having placed over 1 800 orders for this product during the first month of sales: “We therefore have no doubt that the new Spark is going to be a volume player here,” he said. Expanding export markets Local production is set to commence during the first quarter of 2012, creating about 500 direct new jobs in GMSA. The plant will assemble around 15 000 Sparks per annum, with half of this destined for export markets. The Spark will initially be produced for the local market as well for Australia, New Zealand and other Asia Pacific right-hand drive markets. Launched in South Africa in August this year, the Spark is currently imported from South Korea. “This investment reinforces our commitment to doing business in South Africa and continues a key player in motor industry,” General Motors Africa MD Edgar Lourencon said in a statement this week. “This decision was based on the Spark success in the global market and to support GM South Africa’s objective to assemble over 50 000 vehicles per annum, in line with the government’s Automotive Production Development Plan, which replaces the Motor Industry Development Plan in 2013.” He added that the recent labour disruptions in the automotive and components industry, and associated above-inflation wage increases, meant that a concerted effort was called for from the industry, the unions and the government to improve productivity levels in order to reverse the current negative trend. Lourencon said there were opportunities in the short to medium term to expand export markets for the new Spark and Isuzu KB, but that it was “dependent upon the ability of the South African motor industry to improve its overall competitiveness”. The Isuzu export contract, together with the new Spark export contract, is valued at over R1.5-billion per annum. “We want to thank [the] government for the support the industry receives via the Automotive Production Development Plan,” Lourencon said. “Without these levels of support, we would not be able to make these investments in the South African automotive industry.” General Motors South Africa has announced an investment of over R1-billion in its Struandale, Port Elizabeth plant to enable the company to build the new generation Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Corsa Utility and Isuzu KB vehicles for local and international markets. 16 January 2013The South African Police Service (SAPS) made 67 000 arrests around the country over the festive season, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said at a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday. The arrests – for crimes ranging from murder, robbery and rape to fraud, shoplifting and driving under the influence – took place during the course of a festive season safety campaign which began on 15 October and will officially end on 31 January.A total of 704 were arrested for public violence. “We respect the right of citizens to protest as that is a constitutionally enshrined right and we have no intention to tamper with these rights,” Mthethwa said.“We, however, firmly oppose any violent destruction of property, intimidation and murder of innocent people, while these criminal acts are being disguised and justified as public protests.”Lawlessness on the country’s roads was responsible for a high number of arrests, with crimes ranging from speeding to driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.“We remain very concerned about the lack of adherence to the rules of the road, which have resulted in fatalities and loss of lives,” the minister said said.“We arrested 2 751 suspects for driving under the influence, which is exceptionally high.”According to Transport Minister Ben Martins, approximately 1 465 South Africans lost their lives on the country’s roads over the festive season.Stolen vehicles were also a problem, and Mthethwa said the police had confiscated 451 vehicles nationally, with 296 suspects arrested for theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles. In addition, he said, 51 191 fines were issued for offences ranging from traffic violations to unlawfully running liquor outlets.Illegal firearms and ammunition were also confiscated, with the police finding 721 guns and 7 638 rounds of ammunition, including nine commercial explosives.Drugs also posed a threat, but the arrest of 8 889 suspects for drug-related crimes helped put a dent in the scourge.“We confiscated 6-million grams of dagga, 2 832 grams of cocaine, 4 225 grams of nyaope [a mixture of dagga and cheap heroin] and 2 551 grams of tik [crystal methamphetamine].”From the start of the campaign, about 1 477 901 people 501 373 vehicles were searched, with 3 614 roadblocks conducted.Source: SANews.gov.za

A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts MetroPCS, the 5th largest wireless carrier in the United States, has announced a new pricing structure that requires customers to pay extra to access video services other than YouTube, audio including Pandora or any VOIP service, over their mobile devices. GigaOm’s Ryan Kim says the move raises “the specter of consumers paying more for certain kinds of content and the potential for a fractured Internet experience, where users may not be free to jump easily from one site to another.”This could be a key move in the struggle over network neutrality or tiered pricing by content type.MetroPCS’s estimated 6.6 million customers will be given a range of discounted data options, from $40 through $60 per month. Though the $40 per month plan allows unlimited web page browsing and YouTube viewing, and admittedly comes with no contract required, you’ll need to pay more to access other types of media. As the company explains, “With the $50 and $60 service plans, consumers have more data access service choices to better fit their actual usage of certain streaming audio and video content, real-time Internet gaming, music and video downloads and other media applications.”The prospect of paying $40 per month for mobile data access and only being allowed to view online video or listen to online audio from a selected list of sources is just repugnant though, isn’t it?“What this all means,” Kim writes at GigaOm, “is that users can browse Facebook all day long and could click on any YouTube links to see the video. But if they click on a link to another video service, users can visit the site but won’t be able to view the video. Facebook videos are also likely blocked as are streaming music services such as Pandora. [MetroPCS spokesperson Drew Crowell] said YouTube doesn’t have a special relationship with MetroPCS. It was just one of the most popular multimedia sites among MetroPCS consumers so the carrier decided to allow unlimited access to it.”Does that sound fair to you? I must confess, when Google and Verizon made a joint announcement this Summer about Net Neutrality and excluded wireless from their support of it, I didn’t think it unreasonable. (I was nearly alone in this, too, I think.)I think I may have been wrong. Seeing a wireless network put tiered pricing into play makes me feel pretty ill. For some silly reason, I didn’t think they would really do it. The prospect of paying $40 per month for mobile data access and only being allowed to view online video or listen to online audio from a selected list of sources is just repugnant though, isn’t it?Here’s how GigaOm’s Ryan Kim puts it:These new plans, if they’re allowed to stand, show us what the future of mobile broadband will look like if operators have their way. It could be a frustrating experience for users, recreating a walled garden. It’s not surprising that MetroPCS is trying to push this agenda. Most operators would stand to gain a lot if they can get this type of plan to fly. Eventually, I expect MetroPCS won’t be the only operator looking to lay down new toll layers atop the mobile Internet.Related: British Telecom is working on something very similar, called Content Connect. marshall kirkpatrick 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#news#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…

Sure, Russian Arm systems are amazing, and we’d all love to use one, but if you don’t have the budget for one, just build your own car-side camera mount. So, if the tutorial for my previous car camera rig for the hood, roof, or trunk didn’t send you screaming in fear of smashing your camera package into a million pieces, then have I got a new video for you! In this video tutorial, I cover how you can build a car-side camera mount for $50 that will get you some great low-angle vehicle shots without blowing your entire production budget. But, first things first. If you want to learn to capture these challenging but impressive angles, you’ve got to run a safe shoot. And there are laws against the obstruction of the driver’s view that include rearview mirrors. So review your local traffic laws, get the proper permits, and do not drive on public roads with heavy traffic using a side-mounted camera rig.Now then. Let’s get started. Using reclaimed materials, I was able to create a simple side mount using the build platform from my previous mount. However, while it’s not technically necessary, I purchased two dual dent pullers. This keeps things easier to manage due to the different angles of a car’s exterior molding. Attaching all four points is going to be impossible for most compact cars, but two is still possible with a quad version. You will need a truck, van, or SUV with a large flat surface area with good ground clearance for the chase vehicle. (You may want to find access to such a vehicle before creating a rig specifically like mine.)I used two large metal shelf supports to brace two boards at a perpendicular angle, but a rigged metal piece doesn’t allow for angle adjustments, hence the flat surface requirement. Perhaps using metal wire, a turnbuckle, and hinges could accommodate angle adjustment — although you’ll get some bouncing if don’t lock everything down with some tow straps. Suction cup failure is always a possibility, and the straps are a wonderful safety measure. Your heart will thank you later. You can use the same u-bolts to attach the suction cups, but you will need a set of new bolts to attach the metal frames. You can use self-locking bolts to make sure everything stays secure, but make sure to use the right length for your setup. When it comes to testing this kind of rig, I suggest using multi-level parking garages. They are open to the public but don’t have through traffic, and many are nearly empty at the right time of day. Weather is not major factor either, due to the cover. Nearly all of them have lighting of some kind, and most importantly, their traffic is one-way, so there is much less for the driver to worry about. Basically, do everything you can to isolate yourself from other drivers, without obstructing traffic or closing roads — if you have not obtained a permit. Closing a road with a permit usually requires insurance and hiring police officers to direct traffic. But most parking structures have a gate of some kind, so you can use a spotter to inform the rest of the team when other drivers enter the structure.Next was finding a good subject. It needed to complement the sense of speed that this mount creates, as low to the ground as it is. A friend of mine races and builds beautiful motorcycles, so he was the perfect candidate — never ask anyone without professional experience or training to do any stunt work.I also asked fellow photo/video friends to drive, pull focus, and capture behind-the-scenes footage to finish out the crew. A bit of location-scouting helped me figure out what kind of traffic and lighting to expect. There is some specific equipment that really helps out you’re using a gimbal setup. (The next video I create will feature all the equipment I’ve chosen, with commentary on its usefulness and limitations.) Personally, my equipment budget is very tight, but I’ll save up when I have to in order to get good, durable functionality. Here are the main components:GH5: small, easy-to-balance camera with powerful codec options.DJI Ronin MX: cheaper gimbal option, advertised to have stronger motors with GPS capability.Aputure DEC Lens Regain: wireless record function control, f-stop adjustment, and less accurate focus control.Cinegears Rattlesnake Follow Focus: more accurate wireless focus controls that can make a photo lens feel like a true cinema lens.Sigma 18-35mm Art Lens: a fast lens that can change focal length without a change in barrel size or weight distribution.O Gear HDMI Transmitter: wireless HDMI viewing (can be glitchy based on setup and distance).Once everyone is on set, and the equipment is ready, go over the game plan with your entire crew. Create a route for your scene that everyone can follow, including instructions for returning “back to 1” — or the first position of the scene for crew and actors. And be ready for some disappointment here and there. It is very difficult to keep the camera locked on the subject when making the turns due to g-forces. And speed is difficult to manage. But persistence will pay off, and some things you can fix with some editing tricks. (I sped up almost every shot in my thirty-second spec commercial a great deal, for example.) The rest of the tutorial video is raw footage with no processing.Good luck building your own rig!Looking for more video production tutorials?
